Second Day on the Painting

While I am quietly painting I think of so many things I want to say on this new blog of mine...and yet, now, when I click keys to computer, those ideas are nowhere in sight!
The challenging process of actually cranking up the creative motor and finally, brushing the color onto the paper,  sometimes last a long time.  Yesterday I used almost an entire day before choosing and mixing the oil paint; taking down the 55" x 55" piece of paper from the wall to work on it; measuring and taping the paper before plunging ahead.  It is so easy to procrastinate and find other things to do instead of trying to pull ideas from my mind and transferring them to a surface.
For day 2 of making this painting, I adhered blue tape along a measured section of the top and bottom of the paper in order to help me keep one segment of the paper absolutely white.  I then mixed ultramarine and indigo Windsor Newton oil paint in a jar along with some Windsor Newton Liquin.  Normally I squeeze out the paint onto a palette, but this time I had a large amount of surface to cover with exactly the same color.  This was the first time I have done this--and think I was inspired by deKooning who used to mix his paints to a certain consistency in jars.  I am sure there are many other artists who employ the same technique--and it sure beats remixing paint on a palette.
After about an hour I finished the dark top and bottom sections of the painting.
Here are the results of that process.
You can still see the pieces of blue tape on this picture.
I am planning to put my interpretation of icebergs in the white section.  Stay tuned!

Starting My New Painting on December 18, 2010

Today I began a new painting.  The blog will describe the process up until the painting is finished...whenever that is.
The idea for this work has been rummaging around in my mind for a while now...but we'll see what the final result will end up being.
*Beginning size is 54" x 54"
*Surface is cold pressed rough watercolor paper cut from a roll
This afternoon--as it started to get dark (this happens so early now)--I applied a coat of white acrylic gesso on the paper--just enough to coat the paper, but not enough to completely eliminate areas of roughness.  The gesso coat will dry quickly. The paper hangs on a wall that is protected with a painter's plastic cover.
Using a large 3" thick brush, it took almost an hour to coat the paper.  I listened to classical music from Wyoming which streamed in on internet radio.  I love Jackson Hole, Wyoming,  and love listening to the Jackson weather report--especially when it is snowing.   Most of the time I turn off the hourly BBC news because most of it is so depressing.
The not very clear picture here was taken with my iPhone.  At least you can see the paper--but the lighting created three ovals--think I will use a better camera for some of the other photos.
Hope you enjoy the process.  Maybe someone will become inspired to put brush to paper--a fun, therapeutic and definitely creative endeavor!  I am excited about what will happen!  Art is awesome!

On the Way Home

These days lots can be accomplished on your laptop when you can get online while flying.  I have been  cleaning my desktop; catching up on emails and writing my blog!!
I am returning home on a six hour flight from Boston to San Francisco.  Ole Man Winter has his grip in New England at the moment..brrrr!  Ice even coats the small ponds which dot the landscape.  Seeing that ice brought back memories when, a long time ago, I used to skate and play ice hockey on such frozen- over ponds...
Ice is the subject matter of my current art work series...  During the past year I have been painting icebergs--and here is an example of a 6" x 6"x 2" piece made with dried paint collaged onto oil painted wood.  My concern for the disappearing ice and my worries about global warming are two of the reasons I am painting such pieces.

One More Item About Leonard Cohen

Our minds are still wrapped around the formidable concert that Leonard Cohen gifted us with in Portland, Oregon, on December 8.  Here is a youtube video someone took that hints at just how great he is.  Check it out.

The Night I Saw Leonard Cohen

Leonard Cohen graced us at a memorable concert in Portland, Oregon on December 9, 2010.  What a night!  We were among the approximately 6,000 fans who loved every moment of his almost 3 1/2 hours on stage.  Not bad for someone who is 76!
We were fortunate to go backstage post performance and some of the performers and crew tasted  Rex Hill wines from Newberg, Oregon.  (Leonard did not have any since he does not drink wine, if you are curious about that fact!) These great Pinot Noirs and Chardonnay and Pinot Gris  are made by Sam Tannahill and Cheryl Francis--outstanding winemakers!
Check out the web site:  www.rexhill.com and, while you are at it, the website of www.atozwineworks.com  whose moniker is:  "Aristocratic Wines at Democratic Prices"!

First Blog, First Day, First Moment

Welcome to my blog.  Here is a recent mixed media piece I have just completed.  It is oil on gessoed paper with painted plastic segments.  Title is "Plastic Iceberg 7"--with 7 being my favorite number.  The size of the piece is approximately 54" x 54".  Let me know what you think of the piece.
